Opportunities from liberalisation of Trade in Services - The Private Sector's Interest

With the support of the Industry Department Services Support Fund and the Pacific Basin Economic Council Hong Kong, China Member Committee, the Hong Kong Coalition of Services Industries (HKCSI) launched a study entitled “Opportunities from Liberalization of Trade in Services – The Private Sector’s Interest” in August of 1998. The purpose of the study is to explore business opportunities arising from the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and to develop a private sector “wish list” for the year 2000 round of WTO negotiations on Services. Sectors covered by the study are Financial Services, Business Services, Information Technology Services, Distribution Services, Construction and Related Engineering Services, Transport Services and E-Commerce.

Deliverables from the project are:-

handbook.jpg (2031 bytes)The Electronic Handbook provides the most up-to-date information on liberalization commitments made by Hong Kong and its major trading partners. It has a cascade menu for sector selection and allows multiple country selection and retrieval of information with any combination of market access, national treatment and modes of supply.

report.jpg (2893 bytes)The Services 2000 Report summarizes the private sector's wishes for liberalization of trade in services for 2000 and beyond. It also includes discussions on the possibility of business opportunities for Hong Kong services providers in the context of service deregulation and liberalization as well as the implications of these wishes for the upcoming Services 2000 negotiations and provides recommendations.

The Private Sector's Wish List represents the expectation of the Hong Kong business sector for the GATS negotiations. The list has been compiled from the results of an 18-month study on “Opportunities from Liberalisation of Trade in Services – The Private Sector’s Interest”.
